London, 20 September 2016 – Footballers Rio Ferdinand, Mark Noble and Bobby Zamora, will be at MIPIM UK this year to showcase Legacy, their unique project that combines residential, sport and community led development whilst also aiming to deliver schemes with up to 50% affordable housing.
Last October, at MIPIM UK 2015, Legacy were introduced to Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) who shared their vision for delivering united communities through the provision of quality housing and fully integrated sports and community facilities. Twelve months later Legacy and CBC are fully committed to regenerating a deprived area of Houghton Regis, in Central Bedfordshire and are looking forward to discussing their plans at MIPIM UK.
Rio, Mark and Bobby will be interviewed on stage on Thursday 20th October at 17.30. This is a great chance to get up close and personal with the three footballers and discover their vision for Legacy as well as their wider aspirations in and outside the sporting world.
Rio Ferdinand will also join a panel discussion on Wednesday 19th October, teaming up with experts in the housing industry to discuss Housing Associations and the role of the smaller developer.
“We have spent years trying to figure out how we can make a difference to our communities. We recognise that during times of austerity Local Authorities are looking for innovative ways of delivering social and affordable housing for their tenants as well as building schools, surgeries and sporting facilities to support the local community. Our model can deliver schemes without the Local Authority or indeed Central Government needing to finance the cost of the build programme, while still giving full occupancy and control when completed,” Rio Ferdinand commented.
“We’ve been working closely with Central Bedfordshire Council to understand precisely what is required in their area and we’re very proud of how far we’ve come since we met at MIPIM UK last year. We’re keen to start conversations with other Local Authorities so we can apply the Legacy model to other communities. We are also currently working hard alongside a handful of London Councils to bring a Legacy scheme to their areas, we hope to announce more schemes later into 2016 and early 2017,” added Rio Ferdinand.
Jason Longhurst, Director of Regeneration and Business at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “This partnership with Legacy is a first and will create a new benchmark in the development of attractive, well-designed communities. We are all committed to ensure local people are provided with homes, not houses, in a place in which they can thrive and which we will deliver this at pace.”
Organised by Reed MIDEM, a subsidiary of Reed Exhibitions, MIPIM UK will be held in Olympia, London from 19 to 21 October, 2016.
